The K-Cup Challenge: Coffee People Cowboy Coffee

Once my life’s mission, it’s been over a month since my last K-Cup Challenge post (this sort of feels like a confession).  I’m sure my friend’s over at Shoffee.com (the guys who hooked me up with my latest round of samples) are wondering just what the heck is going on over here at Qwowi.com.  Metaphorically speaking, I’ve fallen off the K-Cup horse a bit while focusing on the annual Golf Guide.  But with 15 straight days of golf pretty much wrapped up, I’m ready to saddle up again.  Now partner, maybe it’s just me, but when you start mixing metaphorical horses, and single-serve coffee, the occasion just seems right for Coffee People’s Cowboy Coffee.

The Description

Saddle up to this full-bodied sweet and syrupy campfire classic

The Aroma

Sometimes you can get a sense of the aroma just by sniffing your steaming hot cup as it comes out of the brewer.  That works well for plenty of blends, but over the months, I’ve discovered that by letting the K-Cup cool, peeling back the foil top, and sticking your nose right in that mess you can get a better sense of things.  So using my soon to be patented peel and stiff method, I can tell you that Coffee People Cowboy Coffee has a very sweet aroma, with hints of dark chocolate.

Drinking it Black

While trying to determine if I like Cowboy Coffee black, I drank two cups, so I think that means it’s pretty good without any cream or sugar.  Now I’ve never personally sat around a campfire with any cowboys (Dallas or otherwise), and I don’t think I’ve hit the trail with any gauchos or buckaroos, or anyone else in a 10 gallon hat.  I have done some camping in my time, and my feeling is Cowboy Coffee captures the essence of coffee brewed in a tin pot (or even a pan) over an open fire.  While it may not have the sophistication of a Van Houtte Eclipse Blend, this stuff drinks pretty good.

With Cream & Sugar

Sweetening it up does cause it to lose some of its “home on the range” qualities, but nevertheless, Cowboy Coffee takes it well, and perhaps transforms into a bit more of an indoor coffee.  Truth be told, I’ve tried it a few different ways, and my personal recommendation it to add just a bit of each.  The blend is plenty sweet on its own, and besides, cowboys don’t like a lot of sugar (I made that up, I really don’t know the first thing about cowboys, except what I saw in Brokeback Mountain).  I wish I knew how to quit you.

Final Thoughts

While maybe not the medium roast super start that Donut Shop coffee is, Cowboy Coffee is very good in its own right.  I’d put it in the same class as the company’s Black Tiger blend, Caribou’s Sumatra, and other medium roasts that I’m fond of.  I probably would have been happier if it was a bit on the darker side, but there are plenty of other roasts that fit the bill.

Shameless Plug

The K-Cup Challenge wouldn’t exist without great sponsors like Shoffee.com.  What’s great about having a sponsor is that unlike Google Ads I serve up here, which I’m not allowed to even suggest you should click on, I can all but demand you visit Shoffee.com for all of your K-Cup needs.  I could probably tell you about Shoffee’s awesome selection, or their CupOfTheWeek site where you’ll find the best K-Cup deals on the net, but rather than bog you down with facts, I’ll simply tell you that Shoffee.com is where I send my friends when they ask me where to buy K-Cups for their new Keurig Brewers.
