The K-Cup Challenge: Timothy’s Mexican Organic

It occurred to me that it’s been quite some time since I reviewed anything from Canadian coffee house, Timothy’s.  So when Joe over at Shoffee.com mentioned that he just got his first shipment of the new Mexican Organic blend, I figured it was high time I reconnected with the company that made the first K-Cup I ever tried.

In the past I’ve been a bit hard on the Timothy’s label.  I’ve called some of their coffees dark solely for dark’s sake, and probably mentioned burnt beans.  Of course, to be fair (to myself and Timothy’s), I do love their White Hot Cocoa and their Sumatran, so me and Tim, I think we’re probably okay.

The Description:

From the Nayarit area of Mexico comes the magnificent organically grown coffee found in Timothy’s Mexican Organic K-Cups.

Joe (from Shoffee.com) Says:

Timothys Mexican Organic Keurig K-Cups are the newest organic K-Cup from Timothys World Coffee. Mexican Organic is a medium roasted single origin coffee that will please the most discerning coffee enthusiast. Timothys Mexican Organic Keurig K-Cups are a sweet and spicy; smoky and smooth: a sublime balancing act resulting in a magnificent cup of coffee.

The Aroma

I tried really hard to come up with something better than “It smell like coffee”, but guess what, it does.  There’s definitely something sweet in the aroma as well.  While I’m not going to say it’s vanilla, it does remind me a bit of vanilla, but not in that in your face flavored coffee kind of way (because this isn’t flavored coffee).  It’s very, very, subtle.

Drinking it Black

Maybe I should be fearful of a coffee that comes from the same country that brought us Jose Cuervo, Tijuana hookers, and Montezuma’s revenge, but hell, Mexico also gave us the sombrero and the burrito, and yup, those same Tijuana hookers (take the bad with the good, right?), so I’m going to take a big ol’ swig.

Two things spring to mind after my first sip.  Wow, there’s a really deep smokey flavor, and wait, where did that smokey flavor just go, because this stuff is really sweet.  I love a coffee that offers a complex mix of flavors and sensations, and Mexican Organic offers just that.  It’s smokey, then it’s sweet and I’m like, wow - that was cool.

Mexican Organic goes down very smoothly.  The only knock I have is that as it starts to cool off, it takes on a slight bitterness that isn’t present when it’s fresh out of the brewer.

With Cream and Sugar

First I added just a little cream and sugar (which is how I usually do it), and it was good.  Nothing super-good, best-coffee-ever-since-the-dawn-of-time good, but nonetheless quite tasty.  On a hunch I decided to go a little crazy with the cream and sugar.  I added so much it was as if I was begging somebody to ask me, “You want a little coffee with your cream and sugar”.  Alas, no one did (probably because nobody saw me do it), but my point is that Timothy’s Mexican Organic is absolutely delicious when you go a bit over the top with cream and sugar.

The medium roast profile lends itself well to being turned a creamy shade of tan.  The flavor is strong enough that it won’t get lost in the cream and sugar, but not so bold that it rejects them altogether.  I’m going to go make another cup, and then comeback for some final thoughts.

Final Thoughts

I’ll keep it simple.  It’s good black.  It’s okay with a little cream and sugar.  With lots of cream and sugar (which I don’t always advise), it’s quite simply has produced the best super light and sweet cup of coffee I’ve made in quite some time.

Shameless Plug

When you think about K-Cups you should think about Shoffee.com.  You should condition your brain to associate the two, just like I’ve accidentally conditioned my brain to think about Pedro Martinez each and every time I open the refrigerator door (seriously, I’m not making this up - I wish I was, but sadly, it’s true).  So repeat after me “K-Cup, Shoffee.  K-Cup, Shoffee.  K-Cup, Shoffee.  Why do I want you to do this?  I do it because I care about you and your coffee needs.  I do it because Shoffee has a great selection of K-Cups (including Timothy’s Mexican Organic) at competitive prices.  They ship fast, which means you’ll have your coffee when you need it (which for me is everyday at 6:30 AM).  I’d also highly recommend you check out Shoffee’s Cup of the Week site for the some of the best K-Cup deals anywhere.

Oh, and while you’re here, check out all of my K-Cup Reviews that are part of a little collection I call the K-Cup Challenge.
