Qwowi in Alaska - Kluane National Park

A two hour bus ride brought us to the edges of Kluane National Park (part of the Canadian National Park system).  The scale of the park is absolutely amazing.  There are no roads into or through the park, despite the fact that it’s roughly the same size as the state of New Jersey.  A substantial portion of the park is made up of ice fields which include Mt. Logan; the highest peak in Canada and the second highest in North America.  Unfortunately Mt. Logan is not viewable from the side of the park we’re on because of the two large mountain ranges that sit between us and it.  As I said, the scale of the park is absolutely massive.

Both the scenery and the weather was the best so far.  Under partly sunny skies the wife and I took a lazy float down the Dezadeash river.  Unfortunately wildlife was in short supply (swallows, ducks and some very angry seagulls), but nonetheless the float was enjoyable and provided ample opportunities for landscape photos.

Tomorrow morning we leave Whitehorse and head to Beaver Creek.  We’re told the only things in Beaver Creek are the very rustic hotel we’ll be staying in, a gas station, and the homes of the people of work at the hotel and gas station.  From the sound of things, the hotel is the kind of place you’d rent by the hour in the lower 48.

For all intents and purposes tomorrow is a travel day, although we are stopping at a dog sled camp which we hope will, at least in part, make up for our previously cancelled excursion.

From Beaver Creek we’ll work our way back into Alaska (Fairbanks), where we’ll eventually find our way to Anchorage a week from now.
