The K-Cup Challenge: Coffee People Kafe-Lua

Normally I try and rotate my K-Cup Challenge posts between my sponsors so that one doesn’t get any more attention than another.  It seems like the fair thing to do, and I hope it keep my sponsors reasonably happy.  That’s all well and good, but when things go horribly awry, as they did with my review of Coffee People Chai Coffee, I feel like I owe it to my sponsor (whichever sponsor it happens to be), to take another shot at the coffee they send as quickly as possible.

So with all due deference to my other terrific sponsors, this review of Coffee People’s Kafe-Lua is my best shot at making things up to Ken and OneGreatCup, and well, I suppose, Coffee People as well..

The Description

Experience the exotic. Bold coffee meets Kahlua® flavored liqueur.

The Aroma

Not surprisingly the aroma is that of a dark roast coffee with a hint of Kahlua. So far so good, I don’t anticipate the need to take any “Kahlua Face” photos.

Drinking it black

Most guys will tell you that they don’t like Kahlua. Let’s face it, there has never in the history of mixed drinks has there been a manly concoction that contains Kahlua. Of course, the truth of the matter is that most guys actually like Kahlua, and are just ashamed to admit it. For the sake of truth, I’m going to own up to liking Kahlua. I like it in my drinks, hell, I’ve even been known to smoke the occasional Kahlua-infused cigar, so it shouldn’t come as any real shock that I enjoy a good Kahlua flavored coffee.

The medium-bodied, deep roasted, Coffee People Kafe-Lua is silky smooth on the tongue and full of delicious dark roast flavor.  The finish is unmistakably Kahlua, and it’s good.

With Cream and Sugar

When cream and sugar are mixed in, the Kahlua flavor becomes more pronounced.  It moves from being the highlight of the finish to the heart of the blend.

The acidity also becomes more pronounced as the finish is dry and tugs on the cheeks and gums just a bit.  It’s not unpleasant, in fact it gives the real character to the flavor.

Final Thoughts

As with most flavored coffees, Kafe-Lua probably won’t appeal to the purists among us.  For Kahlua fans, of which there are no doubt many, Coffee People’s Kafe-Lua is an absolute must-try.  Kafe-Lua is also a good bet for coffee drinkers who mostly like their joe with no frills, but are open to mixing it up every once in a while.  As flavored coffees go, Coffee People’s Kafe-Lua does an excellent job of offering a true flavored alternative, without compromising the integrity of the coffee.

Shameless Plug

Curious about Kafe-Lua?  I’ve got two great options for you.  You can either pick up an entire box of Coffee People Kafe-Lua from my sponsor, OneGreatCup, or you grab a handful as part of a Coffee People Flavored Coffee Variety Pack.  Either way you’ll be able to wrap your taste buds around some great coffee for your Keurig brewer, and you’ll be supporting the people who support the K-Cup Challenge.
