The K-Cup Challenge: Coffee People Chai Coffee
My sample of Coffee People Chai Coffee was provided by Ken Rhodes and the good people at OneGreatCup.net. Ken sent me a few boxes of Diedrich, Coffee People, and Gloria Jean’s to try. The Chai Coffee blend came out of a Coffee People flavored coffee sampler, and gives me the opportunity to sample a few of the many varieties of flavored coffees available for Keurig brewers.
As I sometimes do when it’s warranted, I’ll preface this review by stating unequivocally that I absolute despise Chai. I hate everything about it. The smell, the taste. Ugh, my god, I have no idea why anyone willingly drinks this stuff. Why would we ever waterboard anyone when we have this stuff? I’ll tell you anything you want to know, but please, I beg you, no more chai.
The Description
Chai spices kick up this strong coffee brew.
The Aroma
Smells like what I image cloves marinated in toilet water smell like. I asked my wife for a 2nd opinion, and all she could offer was “Uh, stinky”.
I don’t ever recall wanting to drink something less.
Drinking it black
Spicy, peppery, clovish. Yeah…tastes like Chai. The aftertaste made me want to gag. Maybe there’s some dark roast coffee flavor buried deep in the brew, but, yack, I can’t get past the Chai. Why, Coffee People, why? Why would you do this?
With Cream and Sugar
With an exceptionally generous helping of cream and sugar I was able to cut the spice flavor a bit, but only ever-so-slightly. If you don’t like Chai, and I certainly don’t, there is absolutely nothing that can be done to salvage this wretched brew.
Final Thoughts
In total fairness to both Ken Rhodes of OneGreatCup who sent me the Chai Coffee, and to Coffee People who created the blend, I’m obviously not the demographic they’re looking for on this one. Clearly Chai Coffee is not intended to win over people who hate Chai, so much as, I assume, provide an alternative to tea for those who love it. Although I’m personally content to give it the worst review I’ve ever given a K-Cup, I’m also going to see if any of my contributors actually like Chai. After all, it seems only fair to try and offer a review from someone who has the proverbial snowballs chance in hell of actually liking this stuff. So I guess, stay tuned for Coffee People Chai Coffee, a 2nd Opinion.
Shameless Plug
Good news people, OneGreatCup doesn’t make the coffee, they only sell it. So while Chai Coffee may not be for me (or you), that shouldn’t stop you from visiting my sponsors (again, that’s OneGreatCup), for your K-Cup needs. If you’re the gambling type, you want to try the Coffee People Flavored Variety Pack. In additon to the Chai Coffee, you’ll also get to try their Kafe-Lua, Berry Blast, and Vanilla Avalanche varieties. Trust me, if you can get past the Chai, you’ll be very happy with the rest.

Umm.. Chai is tea not coffee. Chai literally means “tea” in India . Saying “Chai Tea” is just saying it is the indian type of tea.
I just bought my Keurig and started the sampling process. Of the flavored coffees, this Chai coffee is fifth so far. Personally, I’m not a tea person, so if I’m going to do Chai this is it. I drink mine as a latte and, again personally, I love the aroma. The flavor is not over powering but good. My only dislike is that it is weak (watery) in the 8 oz size (the smallest my machine will brew). Of the other flavored coffees that I’ve tried, the Berry Blast by Coffee People is hands down the best. That is followed by the Carmel Vanilla Cream by Green Mountian and Cinnamon Pastry Coffee by Timothys, then the Vanilla Avalanche by Coffee People all before the Chai. None of them are everyday drinks, but when you want something different pick one of these to match your mood.
I have been looking everywher for the Coffee People Chai Coffee. I like it better than any other flavored coffee and hope to find out how to get more of it.
