10 Father’s Day Gifts for Golfing Dads

With Father’s Day right around the corner you’re no doubt racking your brain trying to find the perfect gift for your golfing father or husband.  Not only are we happy to provide you with this list of 10 gift ideas for the golfer in your life, but we also want to let you know that Father’s Day doesn’t have to be 100% about him.

That’s right, sometimes the right gift is the one that comes with a little something just for you.  Some might think that’s a bit selfish, but if you can give dad a great gift, and still do something for yourself at the same time, what’s the harm?  So anyway, without further introduction, here are Qwowi’s 10 Gifts for Golfing Dads.

The uPRO Golf GPS

www.upgrogps.com

One of the hottest on course accessories for the 2008 season, the uPRO Golf GPS has gotten more than its fair share of mention around here.  That’s partly because we’re hoping to entice uPRO to send us one, but mostly it’s because we think it’s a great product.  With cool features like video flyovers and measure mode, the uPRO is hands down the most feature-rich, and visually stunning GPS on the market today.  With their proprietary technology, the team at uPRO guarantees that they can map dad’s favorite course within 4 business days.  If they can’t, the golfing dad in your life gets a free uPRO accessory.  So the worst case scenario is dad gets two gifts instead of one.

What’s in it for you: Admittedly not much, but by taking some of the guess work and over-thinking out of dad’s shot selection, he may just be home in time for dinner.

New Cleveland HiBore XLS Woods

www.clevelandgolf.com

Cleveland’s 2008 HiBore XLS woods are among the longest and most forgiving woods on the market today.  Sure, the sloped-crown design is unique, but why not offer dad the chance to stand out a bit when he’s smashing ball after ball down the center of the fairway.  The best part?  Cleveland has a special promotion running right now; buy a HiBore XLS driver, and a HiBore XLS fairway wood, and get a new HiBore XLS hybrid absolutely free.

What’s in it for you: Are you kidding?  You just bought dad 3 sweet golf clubs.  He’s probably going to do the laundry, cook you dinner, and mop the floors too.  Seriously, 3 golf clubs?  Dad is way psyched.

Golf Art

www.golfsartgallery.com

Let’s face it, golf isn’t a year round game, at least not where I live.  So why not get dad something he can use, or at least look at, year round?  Choose from framed photographs, lithographs, or perhaps even a statue.  Whatever you choose, a nice piece of golf art is a great addition to any office or man room.

What’s in it for you: Do you really want your husband/father decorating his own space?  I know my wife doesn’t.  Buying golf art is a very effective, yet subtle way to take control of what otherwise might turn out to be an interior design debacle.

Wilson Staff Zip Golf Balls

www.wilson.com

I’ve been looking for an excuse to talk about the new Wilson Zip balls ever since the Wilson rep, Casey, gave me a couple to try during a recent demo days event.  The Zip is among the softest balls I’ve played.  The feel off the putter is 2nd to none (I tested it side by side against the Titleist ProV1, Callaway HX Tour, and Nike One Platinum).  It’s plenty long of the tee and spins very well around the green.  Simply put it’s a fantastic golf ball, and no doubt one dad would love to try for himself.

What’s in it for you: For only $19.99 you can get a dozen premium golf balls personalized for dad, and still have $25 (the additional cost of a dozen ProV1s) to buy something nice for yourself.

OGIO Nexos Stand Bag

www.ogio.com

The mostly highly anticipated golf bag for the 2008 season, the OGIO Nexos stand bag should begin shipping within the next couple of weeks.  Why shouldn’t the dad in your life be among the very first to put his clubs in the latest offering from the #1 name in golf bags?

The Nexos’ list of features is too long to print here, but rest assured, all the standard OGIO compliments (zipperless ball pouch, ball silo, Torq strap, as well as the company’s new Arc Lite, no tangle stand system) are built into this bag.

What’s in it for you: The satisfaction of knowing that dad is toting the sweetest stand bag on the market today.  You just bought him an OGIO!  What more could he ask for?

Clicgear Push Cart 2.0

www.clicgear.com

The absolute coolest push cart on the market today, the Clicgear 2.0 has enough muscle to tote around anything from a small stand bag, to a large cart bag.

The 2007 PGA Merchandise Show winner for Best New Product has been improved for 2008.  It features, among other things, airless tires, an improved breaking system, umbrella mount, and a wind-proof score card holder.  Sure, there are other push carts on the market, but how many of them can be folded into a ridiculously small 13″ x 15″ x 24″ package?

Speaking as a pushcart guy who’s tired of wasted trunk space (not to mention pumping air into my cart’s tires, and chasing after scorecards on windy days), I sure wish somebody would get me a Clicgear.

What’s in it for you: In a word, everything.  With its compact size, the Clicgear can be tucked away almost anywhere.  With optional accessories like the wheel cover system, you won’t have to worry about your husband/dad tracking dirt all over the place.  Finally, I don’t know, maybe dad has packed on a few pounds.  Some sweet pushcart action, like the Clicgear, might be just the enticement dad needs to stop riding around, and start walking the golf course.

Golf Lessons

If the dad in your life is anything like me, well, let’s just say his game has plenty of room for improvement.  As an alternative to another $200 spent in search of yet another magic club, why not have dad spend some quality time with a teaching pro in your area?

If dad only needs a tuneup, a single lesson may suffice.  If dad is in need of a complete overhaul, a package of lessons (often available at a discount over the single lesson rate) is the way to go.

What’s in it for you: A well-instructed golfer is a better golfer, and better golfer is a happy golfer.  Isn’t dad a whole lot more fun to be around after a good day on the golf course.  Yes, yes he is.

Nike Sphere Dry Polo

www.nikegolf.com

Sure, you could go with the old standby tie, but if you must buy clothing for dad, get him something he’ll truly appreciate.  The Nike Sphere Dry Polo is as close to a modern day marvel as a shirt can be.  The moisture wicking fabric is breathable, and stretches as it needs to; meaning it doesn’t get in the way of the golf swing.

The Sphere Dry is available in 14 different colors; all of which look good enough for, not only the golf course, but also the office.  I’m not exaggerating when I say that Nike Sphere are the only polo shirts I buy.  I’ve tried shirts from other manufacturers.  The Nike is more comfortable, and launders so much better (my experience has been that the collars, in particular, hold up much better) when compared to other brands I’ve tried.

What’s in it for you: For better or worse, the way a man dresses says a lot about his wife.  With that in mind, do you really want your husband dressing himself?  I thought not.

Custom Vokey Wedge

www.vokey.com

At $250 a custom wedge from Titleist and Bob Vokey might be a bit of an excess, but dad’s worth it, right?  The limited edition wedges will, when available, feature any number of custom sole grinds, one of which is bound to be just right for dad.  On the downside, there aren’t any available at the moment, but keep your eyes on the site as something might just pop up again before Father’s Day.

Even if it doesn’t improve his game, the Vokey wedge will still look good in his bag.

What’s in it for you: As part of the purchase price, you’re entitled to have the wedge stamped with whatever lettering you choose.  Sure, you could go with something like “WORLDS BEST DAD”, but why not have your own name stamped into the finish so that dad will have no choice but to think of you each and every time he reaches for his favorite wedge.

A Trip to Wisconsin

www.destinationkohler.com

Now I know what you’re thinking, and no, I didn’t take an errant tee shot to the head.  Hear me out on this.  As far as this golfer is concerned, there is no better gift for the golfing dad than a trip to Wisconsin, more specifically, the Kohler resort.

Sure, there’s Sawgrass, Pebble Peach, Pinehurst, Bandon Dunes, and countless other golf destinations, but for me, Whistling Straits is really the only choice.

From the time I first saw the Kohler-commissioned, Pete Dye masterpiece (during the 2004 PGA Championship), it’s been my dream to not only play the Straits course, but also the Irish Course, as well as the two courses at Blackwolf Run (that’s right, the resort offers dad 4 spectacular golfing options).

With the 3 day/4 round “To Dye For” package running around $1500, a trip to Kohler is far and away the most expensive gift on this list.  Of course, it doesn’t take but a glance at some course photos to know that this is money very well spent.

Besides, where else do you share the golf course with a flock of Scottish Blackface sheep.  With two miles of uninterrupted shoreline on Lake Michigan, Whistling Straits is a golf destination unlike any other.

Quite frankly it’s enough to make me consider procreating right this second.

What’s in it for you: The Kohler resort isn’t just about golf.  There’s also world class dining at the resort’s 9 distinct restaurants.  Oh, and I should probably mention the Kohler Water Spa.  With a full complement of Spa Services (massages, facials, manicures/pedicures, makeup and hair, etc.), you’ll have plenty more to do (while the dad in your life is out golfing) than sit poolside reading a book.  Quite frankly this gift borders on shenanigans.  Dad thinks he’s getting a golf trip, but what you’ve really done is treated yourself to some time at the spa.  It’s genius right?

The uPRO Golf GPS, Clicgear Push Cart, Wilson Zip Golf Ball, Cleveland HiBore XLS Woods, and Nike Sphere Dry Polo are all available through The Golf Warehouse - Golf’s #1 Online Superstore.

Vokey Custom Wedges are available exclusively through Titleist’s Vokey Website.

For more information about golfing (and the spa) at the Kohler Resort, see the Destination Kohler website.

Golf Lessons are available at a Pro Shop near you.  For those in the greater Albany-Saratoga area of NY, I highly recommend the staff at Northway 8 Golf.

Finally, Golf Art in general can be found by consulting Google.
