The K-Cup Challenge: Timothy’s Mocha Java

My sample of Timothy’s Mocha Java comes from frequent K-Cup Challenge sponsor, Shoffee.com. I had actually requested a sample of Mocha Java as part of my first selection of samples from Shoffee, but alas (and woe is me for that matter), the apparently popular blend from Canadian brewer, Timothy’s was back ordered, so I had to wait.

This time around, however, Shoffee Co-Founder Joe Simonovich was able to get a box out to me, which brings us to where we are today.  If I haven’t made it clear, where, I am in fact am, is over a piping hot cup of Timothy’s Mocha Java.  Let’s get on with it.

The Description

Timothy’s Mocha Java Keurig K-Cups are a blend of the bright sweetness of Ethiopian beans and the hearty body of Indonesian beans. Enjoy exotic flavors and subtle nuances in this blend. With balanced flavor, this coffee is great black or with milk.

The Aroma

I had hoped for a strong, chocolaty aroma.  I mean, that’s what I’m in it for; the chocolate.  There’s a reason why I had a $5 a day Venti Mocha habit a few years back, and it wasn’t because of the venti -and it sure as hell wasn’t because I’m a huge fan of Starbucks.

So anyway, the aroma was a little disappointing.  It has what I’ll call a classic coffee scent, but I’m not feeling the mocha here.

Drinking it black

Timothy’s Mocha Java is a medium roast, with medium body, and medium acidity.  Consider that foreshadowing if you will, because as I’m about to tell you, much about this blend is average.

The chocolate flavor one expects from anything labeled “mocha” is largely absent.  I suppose there is a hint of cocoa, but I actually feel like the fruit notes; specifically blackberry, are far more pronounced.

Drinking it black I found it to be reasonably smooth, although there was a touch of that raspy bitterness on the back of the throat.  Maybe it’s a Canadian thing, maybe it’s a Timothy’s thing, but generally speaking, I don’t find the blend to be as smooth as some of its south of the (northern) border competitors.

With Cream and Sugar

Maybe it’s my imagination.  Maybe it’s selective tasting, but with cream and sugar, I got to thinking maybe I was tasting a bit more of the mocha.  Certainly after a little lightening and sweetening, there’s a stronger chocolate taste to the finish.  Count this among the blends that absolutely requires cream and sugar to be at its best.

Final Thoughts

Like a fair amount of the coffee I’ve reviewed, Timothy’s Mocha Java, is just ok black, but when cream and sugar are added, it sneaks somewhere in between good and very good.  It’s not the best K-Cup I’ve sampled thus far, but it’s my favorite of the Timothy’s to date.

Because of the mocha flavor (such as it is), it’s equally well-suited as either a morning staple, or with dessert.  If you’re looking to get your feet (or whistle) wet with Timothy’s, Mocha Java is a good place to start.

Shameless Plug

Can I talk to you for a minute?  Look, I know we just met, but I want you to understand something…I’ve got a good thing going here with Joe and the team at Shoffee.  They send me boxes of K-Cups to drink, I write reviews, and then you visit Shoffee.com and buy, among other things, a box or two of Timothy’s Mocha Java.

For to work, you to buy from my sponsors (like Shoffee.com <- did I mention them already).  Yeah…I know, you hardly know me, but you’ll just have to trust me on this.  Have I lied to you yet?  Not only does Shoffee offer a great selection of K-Cups for the complete lineup of Keurig Home Brewers, they also offer the brewers themselves (choose from a B40, B60, or flippin’ sweet B70).

I’d also encourage you to check out cupoftheweek.com.  Each and every week you’ll find a special pricing on the K-Cup of the week.

Hey, and while you’re here, check out the growing list of reviews in Qwowi’s K-Cup Challenge.
