The K-Cup Challenge: Green Mountain Fair Trade Island Coconut Coffee

Let me start with a disclaimer, if you’ve read my profile then you know that I’m crazy for anything coconut, so I was either going to love this coffee or hate it. Green Mountain’s Fair Trade Island Coconut Coffee is a spring seasonal flavor that claims it will send you to paradise with it’s sweet, creamy flavor.

What it says on the box

A quick trip to paradise. A tropical blend of sweet, creamy coconut.

Tasting Notes

(from www.greenmountaincoffee.com)

Indulge your senses with this delightfully fragrant, tropical taste treat.

We’ve captured the lush aroma of freshly grated coconut — fruity, fresh, exotic — and blended it with the subtle sweetness of a lightly-roasted, Central American coffee. The result is as refreshing as it is unexpected.

Be transported to your own private island paradise with our Fair Trade Island Coconut… it’s one sweet destination!

The Aroma

I caught my first whiff of this blend as a co-worker walked by with a cup. I was like, HOLD ON, is that coconut coffee I smell?? The aroma alone was enough to make me love it. As I brewed my first cup I have to admit, it was indeed a tropical blend of sweet, creamy coconut. I couldn’t wait to taste it to see if the flavor was anything like the yummy aroma!

Drinking it Black

I take all my coffee black and so if it’s at all acidic or too sweetly flavored I don’t enjoy it. This flavored coffee is just sweet enough to deliver the coconutty flavor but not so sweet that it was overpowering. The coconut flavor is probably the most accurate I’ve tasted in a coconut coffee and I’ve had my fair share. This coffee is good enough to make me hoard all the K-cups I can find and save them for when I’m craving that coconut taste!

With Cream and Sugar

Since I take all my coffee black I didn’t sample this with cream and sugar as our regular taster, Tony would have. However I imagine that adding a little light and sweet would just enhance the flavor. I would guess that you don’t need too much or it might just be a sweetness overload.

Final Thoughts

Now I don’t know about the quick trip to paradise part, but my taste buds sure did enjoy this blend. Unfortunately this coffee is retired until Spring 2009. But you can be sure that as soon as it’s offered again I’m stocking up for the year.
