The K-Cup Challenge: Green Mountain Double Black Diamond
Our sample of Green Mountain Double Black Diamond was provided by our friends at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. Apart from being the ultimate source for Green Mountain K-Cups, Green Mountain Whole Bean Coffee, and a whole bunch of other really cool stuff, they also have some pretty great information on coffee in general. When you have some time, check out The Story of Coffee on the Green Mountain Web Site.

Now on to the review…
The Aroma
Green Mountain Double Black Diamond (extra bold) is smoky with a hint of peppery spice. The aroma is strong…very very strong, and you can expect it to tickle the nostrils a bit.
Drinking it Black
Whoa. On the 8oz setting of my company’s B140 brewer Double Black Diamond yields a heavy-bodied, hardy cup of coffee. With a name like Double Black Diamond, you’d expect it to be strong, and it doesn’t disappoint.
The blend has the flavor of deep, dark roasted beans, but it doesn’t come close to tasting burnt, or dirty. It finishes with just a hint of caramel For such a ridiculously dark blend, the total lack of bitterness is a remarkable accomplishment. I found it surprisingly drinkable for such a heavyweight. While the jolt lasts, the flavor doesn’t linger any longer than it ought to, which again, is a pleasant change from most blends with this kind of muscle.
With Cream and Sugar
After taking a few minutes away from my cup of Double Black Diamond to shave my eyeballs (yeah, it’s got a kick), I added some cream and sugar. My standard amount of cream and sugar did almost nothing to change the color or the flavor. So I added some more. And then a little bit more. The lesson here; it takes an obscene amount of cream and sugar to get the attention of this monster. Don’t even think about trying to tame it. I made the coffee a little lighter, and a little sweeter, but it still slapped me around with the force of a thousand angry pimps. Do not disrespect the Double Black Diamond.
Final Thoughts
Although it should go without saying, let me spell it out for you. Green Mountain Double Black Diamond is not a breakfast blend. In fact, it’s heavy enough to actually be breakfast. Without a doubt it has more texture than your average K-Cup.
It actually reminds me of days of yore (”yore” referring to a time before we got a Keurig brewer in the office), when our engineers would run twice the standard amount of our old ground coffee (poison) through a brewing cycle to make it as thick and rich as possible. Double Black Diamond is not for the bashful.
All talk of potency aside, Green Mountain Double Black Diamond K-Cups are quite tasty. I mentioned the caramel, but there is although a pleasant earthiness to them that’s reminiscent of the Dark Magic variety that I love so much. I’ve enjoyed the samples I’ve tried so far, and you can bet I’ll drink it again, although it’s safe to say I’ll never drink two in the same morning. Then again, I don’t know why I’d need to. I’d also advise against using the smaller 6 oz. setting, all the twitching would probably interfere with what you need to get done. Definitely keep this stuff away from your dentist.
The absolute bottom line is that it’s damn good coffee with great flavor beyond what you’d expect could be achieved in such a dark roast.
