The K-Cup Challenge: Timothy’s Extra Bold Midnight Magic
I’ve just about run out of ways to talk about how I received the samples for my reviews. I’m pretty sure some guy in our accounting department fills out a form, most likely on a monthly basis, and then Monday morning (usually around 8:30), a bunch of boxes arrive. 3 of those boxes are filled with smaller boxes of K-Cups for Keurig Brewers. As luck would have it, one of those smaller boxes happen to contain 24 Timothy’s Extra Bold Midnight Magic.
Full Description
Adding to Timothy’s tradition of excellence, we are proud to offer this very dark and robust new blend. This tangy blend is dark, sweet and powerful. Created to harmonize the body and sweetness of top quality Arabica coffee with the spiciness of West Coast roasting, this is a rich coffee that will perk up your day.
The Aroma
Nothing in the Aroma of Timothy’s Midnight Magic really grabs my attention. Sometime I struggle to individualize what I’m smelling in a cup of coffee. Perhaps there’s a bit of dark cocoa, and caramel, I’m just not sure. For the sake of sounding all sorts of sophisticated, let’s try, “The deep and mysterious aroma of Midnight Magic snared me in its web of complexity”. Yeah…let’s go with that.
Drinking It Black
I’m starting to think that it doesn’t matter what’s in my first cup of the day. Regardless of the K-Cup I choose, it always seems to taste a little bit bitter. It’s not until the 2nd cup that my senses really awaken. Such was the case with Timothy’s Midnight Magic. My 2nd cup was significantly less bitter than the first. It could be I got a bad cup the first time around, but I think it may have more to do with my general lack of awareness of anything at 6:30 AM. Anyway… for such a deep, rich, coffee I found it surprisingly easy to drink black, but as usual, it’s nothing I’d likely do in practice. It’s a heavy-bodied monster of a brew to say the least, and the flavor, for better or worse, does tend to settle in to the back of the throat.
With Cream & Sugar (Splenda)
Unlike some of the coffees I’ve discussed so far, the Timothy’s Midnight Magic is nearly impervious to cream and sugar. You can make it light and sweet, but it takes quite a bit more effort than your probably used to, and to that end, Midnight Magic is probably the wrong choice for lovers of the light and sweet - especially so early in the morning. These days I’m mixing my coffee to a dark brown shade, to which Midnight Magic lends itself very, very well.
Final Thoughts
I have mixed feelings about Timothy’s Extra Bold Midnight Magic. I like it, but I’m definitely not qwow’d by it - I certainly don’t crave it. In much the same way as one of my readers pointed out about Timothy’s Parisian Nights, Midnight Magic isn’t so much a great cup of coffee as it is a swift kick in the pants to get you started on the road to productivity. It does it’s job well enough, but if given a choice of the Timothy’s I’ve reviewed so far, I’m taking the Sumatran Gold every time.
