Callaway I-Mix Drivers Hit the Market…Almost

A couple of WhatTheDeuce’s favorite stores, The Golf Warehouse, and Golfballs.com are now taking orders for Callaway’s new I-MIX driver system, which will begin shipping around the 25th (March 2008).  I’ve mentioned the new interchangeable system of heads and shafts a few times before, because, well, I’m pretty excited about it -although maybe not $600 worth of excited.

The new system, which features both tour and standard model heads from the popular FT-5 and FT-i series drivers, promises playability on “Any Course, Any Condition”.  The concept behind the marketing is that more advanced golfers will embrace the world of options that interchangeable shafts make available.  And of course, hacks like me will delude themselves into thinking that having 4 heads and 6 shafts will dramatically improve their game.  Hey, that might be true, right?

The course is wet today?  No problem switch to a clubhead with more loft to increase carry distance instead of fighting those soggy fairways for every little bit of roll.  Playing a course with narrow fairways?  Switch to a heavier shaft for more control.  Wide open fairways?  Change to a longer, lighter shaft, and swing away.  Teeing off in December in the Northeast?  Switch to a more flexible shaft.  Hurricane conditions?  How about a lower lofted clubhead and a low launch shaft?  Anyway you want to play it, the I-Mix system has got you covered (assuming you can afford multiple heads and multiple shafts).

For guys like me, the I-MIX system pretty much means we can tinker with our equipment whenever we feel like, just because we feel like it.  From a more practical standpoint, the I-MIX system, and others like it, will allow you to make more frequent, less expensive upgrades to your equipment (we all like new stuff right).  I’d also imagine that if you break a shaft (which I’ve done 3 times in 5 years) it will make the replacement process a lot easier (ideally, no more being without your big dog for 2-3 weeks).

Callaway says “Each Round of Golf is Different”.  That’s definitely true - sometimes I hit it into the pond on #7, other times it’s the point on #9, and occasionally the pond on #16.  Let’s face it, most of us probably aren’t going to buy 4 heads, and 40 shafts (that’s right, there will be at least 40 shafts available when the I-Mix ships later this month), but even with a single head, and a couple of shafts, Callaway’s I-MIX system will give you options, and options are good, especially on the golf course.

The cost of an I-MIX head ranges from $350 for an FT-5 head to $400 for an FT-i model.  I-MIX shafts range in price from $150 to $350, and pretty much any shaft you would want is on the list.
