WTD’s 2008 Golf Gear Preview

This year we’re going to do the WhatTheDeuce Golf Gear Guide differently. As much as I’d love to cover every new product from every significant manufacturer, I’m afraid there is just too much out there. The manufacturers are churning out new stuff at a rate that’s almost impossible to keep up with.

While there are some innovative new products hitting the market (and I’ll single those out as we go along), a good bit of what you’ll see this year is little more than the evolution of products you saw last year. The alphabet soup (MOI, LCG, etc.) is as pervasive as ever, and the marketing guys are ready to douse you with a bucket full of clever sounding, trademarked acronyms and phrases, that pretty much all mean the same thing.

Once you get past the mumbo jumbo and marketing double-speak you’ll see that everyone is selling the same things; greater distance, more forgiveness, better feel, and more workability. Granted, each does it in it’s own way, and that packaging is a little different, but you’d be hard pressed to find any single item that is significantly better than the equivalent product on the next rack.

The upside to the equipment deluge is that I can guarantee you there’s an awesome set of clubs just right for you - no matter what level your game is on. In fact most of the major players in the golf equipment game offer 2 or 3 distinct product lines which ensures they can fill the needs of everyone from the beginning hacker, to the scratch player, and of course, everyone in between. It truly is a great time to be a golfer - especially one with some spare cash in his wallet.

This year’s guide will be titled “Filling my bag: <insert manufacturer here>”. The premise of the posts are: What if I had to buy all new equipment tomorrow? What if it all had to come from the same manufacturer? I’m starting over from scratch.

Along the way I’ll detail the products I’d buy (in most cases sight unseen), and touch upon those I wouldn’t.

I’ll be selecting drivers, putters, and everything in between. I’ll chose balls, shoes, maybe a shirt, and a golf bag too. I’ll cover as much as I can with out the burden of having to cover it all.

Once I’ve worked my way through the biggest names on the scene, I’ll spend a couple of days touching on the best of the rest. Finally, we’ll wind things up with my 2008 dream bag; the best of the best.

The 2008 golf season is underway. What will you put in your bag?
